First's draw a blank at Spelthorne

By Gary Brigden

We moved six points clear of second placed Chertsey on Saturday, but they now have a massive eight games in hand.

Rovers suffered several blows prior to kick off, with keeper Ollie Ellaway failing a fitness test, meaning club captain and defender Aaron Bogle donned the gloves. With Matt Ferdinando and Craig Hastings also breaking down in the warm up it meant an unexpected look to the Rovers line up.

In truth the first half whilst being a hard fought contest was one with limited chances, and it was no real surprise when half time came scoreless.

The second half was better, although again chances were at a premium. Phil Page saw a spectacular attempted overhead kick end up badly, whilst the nearest either side came to a goal was on the hour, when a great volley by ex-Rovers man Tom Neale, bought a superb save out of Bogle.

With Rovers having mixed fortunes at Spelthorne in the past, a point is not a bad effort, but in terms of the table, whilst they still head it, come kick off next weekend Chertsey may very well have returned to top spot.
