First's slump to Spelthorne loss

By Gary Brigden

It's not often this season that we have been second best, but that was the case yesterday as Spelthorne picked up a 4-1 win.

We were strangely off colour throughout the game, against opponents who simply out-fought and out-desired us.

A great strike on 19 minutes put us ahead, and although Tommy Smith levelled, before a free kick on the stroke of the half time interval put the visitors back in front.

We threw caution to the wind in the second half, but a mixture of resolute and brave defending, plus a couple of cracking saves kept us at bay.

We looked as though we have levelled with just under fifteen to go, but Matt Farrell saw his effort chalked off for offside, and almost immediately we got in a tangle at the back, conceded a penalty and the game was up.

A stoppage time strike merely summed up our day.

Congratulations to Spelthorne, better side on the day and fully deserving of their win.
