Mixed results for Sunday seniors

By Gary Brigden

Heartbreak in the county cup for SCR Sunday, but the A's keep their promotion hopes alive.

SCR Sunday bowed out of the county cup when they suffered the heartache of a penalty shoot out defeat against a powerful Shire Utd side.

After a goalless first half Shire struck early in the second half to put themselves 1-0 up, we missed a gilt edged chance when Jordan Meredith fired wide with the goal gaping, and shortly after the visitors went 2-0 ahead.

We rallied superbly, and a double by Meredith pulled the scores level, and in the dying minutes we had a good shout for a penalty turned down.

And so to the shoot out, Casey McCabe and Louis Chin were successful, but Charlie Anderson and Meredith missed. Shire were successful with all of theirs and progressed to the semi-final.

In league action there were wins for Harrow Sports, Chessington Sports and South West Lions.

Surrey Cup Quarter Final

SCR Sunday 2-2 Shire United
(SU win 4-2 on pens)

Division Two

Harrow Sports 2-1 Tolworth
Malden Vale 1-2 Chessington Sports
Royal Admiral 1-4 South West Lions

In Division Five the A's turned in a sparkling performance to keep their promotion hopes alive, when they beat second placed AFC Ewell 3-1, thanks to a Liam Holden double and another from Stacy Owens.

The win has moved us up into fourth spot in the table, with games in hand on the sides above us, and with all of them still to play once. Realistically any of the top six can win promotion, as the sides are seperated by nine points (leaders Mondial have 28 pts, and sixth placed Sporting Santos 19 pts, but Santos would move three points clear at the top if they were to win all their games in hand).

Finally in their division congratulations to West Woking Wanderers Reserves who picked up their first win of the season this morning.

Division Five

AFC Ewell 1-3 SCR Sunday A
Thames Ditton 4-2 Team H FC
West Woking Wanderers Reserves 4-1 Kingston Boys
