Pre-season preview: H v Tonbridge Angels

By Gary Brigden

It's an unusually early start for the first team this year, but when you get the opportunity to take on a Step 2 side it is hard to turn it down.

Darren, Donny and newly appointed assistant manager Bryan Nzinga put the lads out against newly promoted Step 2 side Tonbridge Angels in what will be an excellent test for them.

The Angels finished in 4th spot in the Bostik Premier division, earning themselves a trip to Haringey Borough in the play off semi final. Two late goals in the first half from Adem Ramaden and Chinedu McKenzie set them on the way, and they withstood a Borough rally to earn a place in the final.

That final saw goals from Chinedu McKenzie and a last gasp Joe Turner penalty give them a 2-0 win. Only though in non league could you win your play off final, and then have to face another Super Play Off Final to earn promotion.

Here, a thriller saw them twice come from behind, with goal from Arthur Lee and D'Sean Theobalds taking the game into extra time. A Tom Derry strike in the first period was enough to put them through.

And so onto this weeks fixture. It will be the first meeting between the sides and one that we are all looking forward to. The management have a few new signings in the ranks for this season, whilst the majority of last seasons successful squad has returned.

Their is a link between the two clubs with Elliott McKimm, son of Angels manager Steve, turning out for our U18 Bostik team.

New rules will no doubt be on show for the first time this week; substitutes off at the nearest point; goalkicks not having to go out of the area, and an interesting one with regards to sin-bins. As a step 5 side we have them in place this season, but what happens when you play a side from a few divisions above?

Anyway, I am sure it will all come out on Friday.

Kick off is 19:45pm at Sutton Utd

Admission is: £7 Adults; £4 Concessions; £1 Under 16's

Unfortunately, due to current working arrangements, and a lack of hours in the day, there will not be a programme for this game.
