Beaten but still heroic
By Gary Brigden
The first team were back in action hosting Sutton United in the Surrey Senior Cup.
A few changes for us for this game starting with Aaron Bogle back into the side, Marlon Pinder into the starting line-up and new signing Neset Bellikli making his debut. Missing for tonights action both out injured were Matt Farrell and Phil Page.
Sutton United started the game of very strong holding onto possession and playing mainly around their back line slowly pushing forwarded trying to create space to capitalise on but the lads kept strong and tight closing out any early chances.
In the fourteenth minute Ollie Ellaway was called into action when United were able to create some space down the left wing, the ball was delivered into the box and Josh Taylor saw his effort towards bottom right corner of the goal denied by the outstretched foot of the keeper.
With twenty minutes of the clock United took the lead when they were able to create some space in the middle of the box with the original shot being saved by an out rushing Ellaway but unluckily the rebounded ball found its way to Tom Bolarinwa and he was able to slot home into an empty net.
The first half came to a draw with United controlling the first half, only real chance for us fell to Marlon Pinder but unluckily the bounce took the ball away from him, a big 45 minutes for the lads coming up to see if we could find a way back into the game.
The lads started of the second half with a very attacking manner instantly putting pressure onto United, that ended up with us being able to create our first chance of the second half only to be cleared by the United defence.
In the fifty sixth minute we were awarded a freekick just outside the United box, up stepped Bellikli who ended up putting it straight at the wall, but the deflection found its way out to Jordan Gallagher in space who ended up narrowly dragging his shot wide of the far post.
In the fifty ninth minute United’s keeper was called into action when a Matt Tanton cross that ended up goal bound had to be pushed over the bar for a corner.
In the seventy third minute we made a double substitution with both Gallagher and Ollie Twum being replaced by Ben Senior and Guy Baskerville.
In the seventy forth minute after only being on the field a minute Senior was played through a lovely pass that caught the United’s defensive line out, but unluckily a United defender was able to get back in time to get a foot in front of the shot turning it into the side netting.
In the eighty fifth minute United put the game to bed when a mistake just outside our box gifted them the ball that they were able to turn into an attack and Brendan McCarthy thumped home their second of the game.
Fulltime came around and we bowed out of the Surrey Senior Challenge Cup. The lads made everyone apart of the club proud tonight by never giving up and constantly going for the whole of the game
