Despite another strong performance Rovers were once again left to rue missed chances and occasional errors as they slipped to a third straight defeat against a Sam Merson inspired Hanworth Villa.
We had the first chance after a couple of minutes but Darnell Bromfields effort was tame and comfortable for Mark Smith. Villa started to turn up the pressure and put us on the back foot, but despite several balls into our area Kacper Orlowski and the backline were dealing well with anything that came their way.
Seven minutes in and a Jeffrey Cobblah corner found Evangelos Empochontsif and his header was cleared off the line by Merson. Back at the other end and a half cleared Villa free kick found Theo Crawford and his shot through a crowd was again comfortable for Orlowski.
On 20 minutes tidy work on the left involving Cobblah, Charlie Stallard and Troy Walters end with Walters seeing his shot going just wide of the left hand post. Gyamfi had a wonderful chance to mark his debut with a goal, a dinked ball over the back line by Walters set him free, and although his shot was on target Smith made a good save to keep the scores level.
From the corner Cobblah found Francis Sey and his effort took a slight deflection and went out for another corner and from that Smith did well under pressure and a quick Villa break ended with Kwatchey doing well to prevent Ali Mansaray from getting a shot away.
Five minutes from the break and Merson split our backline with a wonderful pass to set Alex Body through on goal, but once again Kwatchey did superbly and we cleared the danger. Merson then fired well wide from distance as both sides looked for that vital breakthrough just before the break.
Gyamfi headed a Cobblah corner over the bar and the sides went in level at the break.
Rovers started the second half brightly and from the kick off Walters fed Gyamfi but once again he was denied by a top stop by the Smith, and five minutes into the half we forced a corner after a mistake by Mansaray and from Cobblahs near post delivery Bert Lloyd directed his effort just wide of the post. A minute later and good work by Walters and Gyamfi ended with a ball set back to Sey but once again Smith kept the Rovers effort out.
Merson fired Villa ahead on 52 minutes, somewhat against the run of play. We were cut open at the back and a low cross to the back post, despite the best efforts of Kwatchey, found the Villa man who calmly stroked the ball home.
Rovers were clearly rattled by falling behind and the usually superb Empochontsif misplaced a pass straight to Merson, but his lofted effort cleared the bar. Before the goal kick could be taken Rovers replaced the just booked Bromfield with Cam Dobell.
Midway through the half and a deep Villa corner was headed back across goal and Crawford saw his header turned over by Empochontsif. Rayan Djouadj found his way into the book for a very poor challenge on Sey.
The points were secured for Villa ten minutes from time when Merson picked up possession just inside the Rovers half, drove forward with little engagement with Rovers defenders and crashed an effort into the top corner.
George Wells fired wide from distance as Rovers found themselves caught pushing forward to get back into the game. Stallard and substitute Osaretin Otete linked up to set up Gyamfi, but his header was saved by Smith.
Full time came with Villa picking up all three points, and Rovers left to rue missed chances.
