The First teams fear of penalties struck again last night when they exited the Surrey Senior Cup on spot kicks away at runaway Isthmian South Central leaders Chertsey Town.
Both sides had changes from their usual starting line ups, with Rovers missing Oscar Williams and Ollie Twum (both cup tied), whilst Aaron Jenkins, Max Oldham and Lindell Stewart dropped to the bench.
Rovers were off to the perfect start when the recalled Charlie Martin opened the scoring on seven minutes, and it wasn’t until the half hour that Oliver McCoy bought the hosts level.
We retook the lead five minutes before the break and it was that man Martin again, with his second of the night.
Rovers spurned a couple of good chances in the second half, and you got the feeling that Chertsey would level things up, and so it proved, as with ten minutes remaining, Liam Flanighan made it 2-2 and sent us to penalties.
Straker and McCoy both saw their kicks saved, before Jenkins and Lloyd for Rovers and Lee and Ridgley for Chertsey took the score to 2-2.
Stewart saw his kick saved, and Botti nudged Chertsey ahead for the first time on the night. Holden bought the tie level, but Flanighan converted the last kick to send Chertsey through 4-3.
