ROVERS PICK UP VITAL THREE POINTS

Goals from Aaron Jenkins and Nabeel Ghannam gave the first team a vital win over fellow strugglers Corinthian-Casuals.

With both sides low on confidence and wins (for SCR it was no wins in 8 games) it was a fixture that could have ramifications at the bottom of the table.

A cagey start saw little to warm the cockles early on, before a fierce drive by Nebay Haile bought an excellent stop out of Rovers keeper Oshane Brown, but chances were few and far between early on. Rovers almost snatched the lead just before the break when a low drive by Charlie Martin struck the post and minutes later a Jenkins cross was turned home by the returning Ollie Twum but the flag ruled the goal out.

Rovers snatched the lead early in the second half when Jenkins burst into the area on the right, and his cross-shot deceived Dan O’Donovan and nestled in the net for 1-0. Casuals were given a glorious chance to level midway through the half, when a poor Twum pass released Haile, but again Rovers keeper Brown pulled off a tremendous stop, with Bert Lloyd miraculously clearing the follow up off the line.

Rovers regained composure, but were dealt a blow when a richochet forced skipper Matt Tanton into a last ditch foul, earning the Rovers skipper a second yellow card and reducing the home side to ten.

The impetus was now with Casuals, but Rovers held firm, and with five minutes remaining sealed the win. A mistake at the back by Casuals let in Ghannam, and he rounded the keeper, both centre-backs, another defender before hammering into an empty net.
